Hitchhiking is Illegal in Wyoming

The nearest public transit (Greyhound).point to the gathering is Rock Springs, Wyoming. So please, please, please if you can squeeze just one or two more people into your vehicle from Rock Springs to the gathering, let's help our family get home without getting ticketed.

If any locals know of a legal way to get from Rock Springs to Boulder without a private vehicle, please let us know.

I asked a local cab company how much from rock springs to boulder. (from there it's about 20miles to the gathering) He quoted $248 for the vehicle. If we can get a bunch of people in a car, that might not be too bad. He'll probably charge more for that. This quote was for 2 passengers. check erideshare as well. destination wyoming. my post is under walking123

According to Wyoming state law, it is illegal to hitchhike on a highway. State and local police will enforce this. However, many hitchhikers have had successful trips across the state by either hitchhiking from on-ramps or by using a highway loophole which many cops allow...

It is legal to walk on a highway, if a person is walking facing traffic. In some cases (if the other side of the road is not safe to walk on) a pedestrian can walk with the flow of traffic.

As long as a hitchhiker is not actively requesting a ride (sign raised or thumb out), he or she can keep walking. And this is what cops are likely to tell you in Wyoming:
"Keep walking..."

So be sure to look like you are going somewhere with your own two feet while in Wyoming. Read a section of the law below, and click the link for more related pedestrian laws.

Code 31-5-606 Soliciting on streets and highways.

(a) No person shall be on a highway for the purpose of soliciting a ride, employment, business or contributions from the occupant of any vehicle. This subsection does not apply to persons attempting to obtain assistance for disabled vehicles.

31-1-101. Definitions.
(viii) "Highway" means the entire width between the boundary lines of every way publicly maintained or if not publicly maintained, dedicated to public use when any part is open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel.

This looks like it could easily be exploited if you don't mind fibbing a little. Just carry an old bicycle inner tube with a whole in it, that way you have a plausible exemption to the law. Tell them you have a spare tube waiting for you at your Family's home in Big Sandy. :)

... and if the officer wants to see your bike, just take him down the road a few miles back and insist he files a stolen property report for your missing bike. :P

Warning: this may or may not deplete your good karma juju's. I am also not a lawyer, if you attempt this it is at your own risk. I take no responsibility for anything in life, let alone your actions. Your mileage may vary. See you at the site. Lovin' you! (or is that "Love in you"? you know, it's kind of a dual meaning that phrase, acknowledging the love in both of us. I like it. I like it alot.)

Cuation: Rambling may occur when stoned.

ask a trucker at a truck stop alot of times they can radio out and find someone to take you... I am from Washington and Wyoming and have done this quite a few times... also the cops aren't usually mean about it sometimes they will give you a ride to the next town or until your off the road...
